Slava and me

I had learned German for six years in junior high, high school and college, but had never been there. So when Slava was staying there for a while, it gave me a perfect excuse to visit. I was also concerned about the negative reports he kept sending back, about how people really don't like foreigners, how it's impossible to get a job there, etc. So I had to go see for myself how much of it was true.

Here we are in a department store in Duesseldorf (Schadow Arkaden), so that I could check my email at the cybercafe, and try to teach Slava something about computers. This cafe was a beauty: Compaqs with LCD screens and headphones/microphones, a year before these things became commonplace. Somebody had spent a pretty penny on it. It was all in the open right next to the escalator.
