In Germany, instead of "No dogs", the shop signs would have a picture of a doggy and underneath it, "Ich muss [leider] draussen bleiben." (=I must [unfortunately] remain outside.) Sometimes there was a picture of a bicycle, and once there was a joke sign with a picture of a deer.
