Andrew and I grew up together. We went to the same church together during high school (not the Orthodox one). We both are intellectual and like to talk about ideas. We share a love for foreign films and art films. When I was studying German, we used to talk about Kafka and Leni Riefenstahl. He constantly reminds me that I translated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe into German in high school. That's one of the few book-length translations I ever completed.
We both went to college at the U-Dub (University of Washington), but didn't keep in close contact. Nevertheless, for a period of years we kept meeting accidentally on the Ave, every six months or so. Once when he was getting some fancy handlebars for his bike.
In 1995, after several years without communication, I called on him again. I couldn't handle being the only one I knew who was gay, and going to a church where everyone was straight, and I needed to find some gay friends. Although straight himself, he had lots of contacts, and like a true friend took me to this potluck where I met a lot of people. I have not yet scanned my pictures from those days. Cassidy and Mark are from the potluck crowd as well.
